I heard someone say once that the best things that are creatively produced are ungiven gifts. Not that this is the best thing ever, but this was intended as a present for someone, and after painstakingly spending countless hours trying to get it as close to the original close-up image as I could manage, out of a weird embarrassment, I couldn’t bear to part with it. It’s difficult to look at, it takes me back to a weird time, but I’m glad it happened - before this I hadn’t drawn in years.
KatieJane - 2010
This is based on a promo image for the band Ruby Throat, a side project of Queenadreena’s KatieJane Garside. Out of a Black Cloud Came a Bird, their most recent release, was hauntingly beautiful, and lead to this unfinished portrait. She should be standing in a misty lake, but I never got around to it.
